WRAP is the world’s largest independent factory certification programme, holding apparel and footwear producers accountable for their global manufacturing practices across human rights, workplace standards, and environmental responsibility. Unlike similar organisations, WRAP combines market-driven standards, industry independence, and factory-based certification into one comprehensive framework. We guide you through the WRAP certification process, helping your facility demonstrate a genuine commitment to responsible production and ethical manufacturing practices.
Why WRAP
Endorsed by the American Apparel and Footwear Association (AAFA) whose members produce 85% of sewn products sold in the US, WRAP's principles and certification programme are recognised by major international business associations worldwide
WRAP operates independently in its governance and finances, with its Board majority drawn from non-industry professions including academia and civil society, ensuring impartial and credible oversight
Structure
Factories pay a straightforward application fee, monitors pay an annual registration fee per country, and inspection fees are negotiated directly between factories and their chosen accredited monitor — WRAP does not set or benefit from these fees
WRAP certifies individual factories rather than brands or companies, placing responsibility for improving workplace conditions directly on those who own and operate each specific facility
A single WRAP certification replaces multiple costly audits — previously factories underwent seven or eight audits annually — saving significant time and money for manufacturers, retailers, and consumers alike
Principles
Legal Compliance
All facilities fully comply with applicable laws and regulations across every location where business is conducted, ensuring consistent adherence to workplace and legal standards
Prohibition of Forced Labour
Zero tolerance for involuntary or forced labour of any kind, ensuring all workers engage freely and willingly in their employment
Prohibition of Child Labour
No employee under the age of 14 or below the legally established minimum age is hired, and no employment that interferes with compulsory schooling is permitted
Prohibition of Harassment & Abuse
A work environment free from supervisory or co-worker harassment, abuse, and all forms of corporal punishment is maintained at all times
Compensation & Working Hours
All facilities pay at least the minimum legal compensation including wages, allowances, and benefits, with working hours compliant with local law and at least one rest day provided every seven days
Non-Discrimination
Workers are employed, paid, promoted, and terminated solely on the basis of their ability, with no discrimination based on personal characteristics or beliefs
Health & Safety
A safe and healthy work environment is provided for all workers, including safe and healthy residential housing where applicable
Freedom of Association
Workers' lawful rights to free association and collective bargaining are fully recognised and respected across all facilities
Environment, Customs & Security
Facilities comply with environmental regulations, maintain customs compliance programmes to prevent illegal transshipment, and enforce strict security procedures to guard against introduction of non-manifested cargo into outbound shipments
